St Jude Dream Home opens weekend in Shafter
The fourth St. Jude Dream House in Kern County will be open for tours this Saturday in Shafter from 9 to noon. Lindsay Roller notes the lot was donated and tickets sales support the hospital, which costs over 1 million daily to operate.

Prominent farmer remembered for patriotic nature and faith
A graveside service for William Richard Lachenmaier was held at Shafter Memorial Park with a memorial service at Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church. Born October 6 1919 in Lodi California he moved to Shafter at age five and served in World War II earning bronze stars. He farmed with his father, was active in church and civic groups, loved the outdoors and was an accomplished hunter and pilot. He died June 6 2006 and is survived by his wife Thelma and daughter Jan among others. Donations may go to the church youth ministries or Bakersfield Rescue Mission.

Summer Bridge program readies pre Kindergarteners for school
Local pre-kindergartners join the Summer Bridge program run by Shafter Healthy Start to ease August entry. Activities include songs for ABCs, counting with plastic farm animals, and tracing names, all under the School Readiness initiative led by Laurie Roth with Hilda Osorio and Yvonne Munoz. The June 6 through June 29 sessions run 8 to 11 a.m. to build attention, directions, stories, and participation skills.
