About 500 students received diplomas from Shafter schools while Richland Junior High shaded its ceremony with 205 eighth graders on the SHS football field. Salutatorian Jesus Gonzalez and Valedictorian Holli Capilla led the top ranks, as principals presented diplomas and awards to listed honorees and flower girls.
Four seventh graders earned certificates and $25 checks for nominating street names in Shafter. The project, conducted with local planning and a committee including Ione Lollar and Gretchen Kirk, highlighted town history with names such as Burns Street and Ohanneson Avenue. Additional streets planned include Beltran Hitchcock Doc Kay Vasquez Peters and Regina.
The Shafter Press notes Father’s Day began with Sonora Louis Smart Dodd in 1910 and became a national holiday in 1966. It urges honoring fathers with time and thought, sharing duties, cooking a special meal, or gifting items tied to his hobbies, and wishes Shafter’s dads a Happy Father’s Day.
On June 11 2000 a blown rear tire of a 1997 Ford Explorer driven by Tina Hays caused the vehicle to leave SR 99 near Pond Road Tulare. Audie and Patsy Stiles both in their 70s died in the crash. Hays was ejected with major injuries and not belted. Sherry Hays and Linda Sherman suffered minor injuries. No arrests were reported.
