Virginia Brownell 88 longtime Shafter Press receptionist dies
Virginia Brownell died Saturday June 3 2000 at age 88 born May 21 1912 in Riverside she moved to Los Angeles attended UCLA and joined Chi Omega later relocating to Shafter in 1946 where husband Arthur owned Western Auto Store She worked 27 years at the Shafter Press retiring age 87 She was active as Shafter Women’s Club president 1949 50 and lifelong Shafter Congregational Church member She is survived by son Art Brownell and his wife Lois Memorial gifts to American Cancer Society.

Girls Summit Encourages Being Your Best Self
Richland Middle School hosted a Girl's Summit at the Neighborhood Activity Center sponsored by Shafter Healthy Start West Kern Mental Health KCEOC and Kern County Public Health Nurse. Seventy eight girls registered at 9 am, received art mural materials for the I Am piece, and heard a motivational talk by Shafter Junior Misses Katie Mack and Michelle.
