Shafter staff and council finalize a 2000 2001 annual operating budget projecting 26.3 million dollars in costs. A public hearing is scheduled for June 27 at 7 p.m. at city hall to discuss and approve the document detailing 160 revenue sources. A four hour planning workshop was held June 12 at city hall.
At the June 13 meeting city manager John Guinn touted a better than balanced budget with 27.5 million in revenue and 26.36 million in expenditures. The agenda includes Public Works expansion, three new police cars, a potential COPS officer, and $10 million for capital projects such as Downtown, Rodriguez Park, water tanks, alley improvements, west side park land, and a major sewer line. The council approved a resolution to apply for funds to support Dial-A-Ride and scheduled an November 7, 2000 election for a related measure.
Travis Felsinger, SHS senior, graduates with a 4.296 GPA the highest in school history and earns California Golden State Scholar, passing seven state tests to qualify. He will attend UCSB on a full Chancellor Scholarship, majoring in mathematics with possible later focus on physics.
Local florists and rose growers embrace National Rose Month with June sales framed by Shafter’s Sun Country Flowers noting men buying for women and gifts for mothers and sisters. Hutson of Bear Productions praises roses for year round appeal, fragrance, and long vase life, while Woods calls the flower elegant and beautiful.
