Hot brakes spark fires along railroad line
A hot brake on a Santa Fe Railroad train caused six small grass fires Sunday between Riverside Avenue and 7th Standard Road. Kern County Fire Department firefighters spent about 90 minutes dousing the blazes. The brake threw sparks and ignited 15 to 20 fires between Delano and Bakersfield, with officials noting such incidents are common along rails in summer due to hot spots or brake shoes. The railroad has a hazard reduction program and weed cleanup along the line.
