Shafter Farmers Market Opens Saturdays at 10 A.M.

The Downtown Parking and Business Improvement District sponsors a weekly Shafter Farmers Market at 10 a.m. on Saturdays at James and Central. Local gardeners can apply for certification at nearby shops. call Linda Gragg at 746-3982 for details. Also note the 1990 Summer Reading Club Kids And Books Are Magic begins after school and runs to August 4 at Shafter Library.

Shafter approves park annexation and transit funding plan

Shafter City Council on June 5 approved annexation of North Shafter North Park area designated Annexation No 64 aimed at easing water problems and supporting growth. Pre zoning includes one family dwelling agricultural general commercial and light manufacturing. Council also diverted about 160000 in state transit funds for street repair and pursued a UMTA Capital Grant for a 45000 handicapped Dial A Ride van. The body endorsed Agricultural Chemical Waste Collection Days in September and set a June 19 budget public hearing. An updated Alternative Water Supply Study by Kennedy Jenks Chilton is now at City Hall.

Festival Committee reports results at Shafter Chamber

May Festival Committee heads Jeannette Hernstedt and Louise Jones summarized this year’s event at the June 8 Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture meeting. They cited net proceeds, 126 runners in the 10K, 60 arts and crafts booths, and $4,000 in the Cow Pie Contest. They announced a final festival meeting June 18 at 7 p.m. and noted sponsors. A lawsuit against Artist Production Group seeks refunds for poor quality festival brochures.

Retirees Honored as Kern High Board Meets

The Kern High School District board of trustees held a regular meeting on Tuesday June 4 honoring Shafter retirees Barbara Mizell and Harvey Mizell for a combined 61 years of service. Harvey, a custodian and bus driver who graduated in 1953, began work 17 days later, while Barbara, an instructional materials clerk, retires after 24 years. The board also appointed Michael Ramos, a 13 year district veteran, as division task force leader and heard a new recycling proposal from North High student Russell Fortmeyer urging polystyrene recycling consideration.

Fatal motorcycle crash at Minter Field ends Bakersfield man

A Bakersfield man died from injuries after a motorcycle wreck at Minter Field Airstrip 34. Stewart Dickerson, 27, was riding a 1976 Kawasaki 900 mph 80 to 90 when a front wheel wobble caused loss of control and a 350 foot skid. He died at Kem Medical Center after ambulanced transport.
