Delbert Smart LaVar McDonald and Beverly Voth won at the amateur show during the summer recreation program. About 130 spectators watched as wind toppled music stands and Prizes from Sprouse-Reitz Shafter News Western Auto were awarded by Paul Newell Jr.
City Council approves a lease rental for an Allis Chalmers road maintainer to aid badly needed road repairs. Ordinance No 64 raises distributor licenses to 1000 yearly and increases clerical duties with a new city assessor position at 30 dollars monthly. Ned Jenner is approved for police duties replacing Dave Unruh on leave. Blake Witcher shifts to a regular patrol. Annexation of west 145 feet of lots 19 and 30 is granted.
Myrle Royal reports the Shafter Chamber of Commerce launches its annual membership drive to re enlist old members and recruit new ones. It urges growers shippers and produce buyers to join as Shafter, a Northern Kern cotton and potato center, seeks to strengthen transportation housing schools and recreation through an active chamber. Members are asked to send fees to Al Mortimore, secretary.
Miss Kern County Myrle Royal of Shafter departs at 8:00 a.m. for Santa Cruz to represent Kern in the Miss California contest. Accompanied by Jean Hill and Kern County Chamber of Commerce members, she aims for Miss America in Atlantic City if she wins. Royal, born in Dodson Texas, is a Shafter High School alumna and plans a Pasadena secretarial job and December marriage to Joe Johnson.
Rosary was Wednesday evening for Louis Alonzo five of Shafter Mexican Colony who was accidentally killed when caught between a truck and a car. Burial was Thursday at Shafter Cemetery. He is survived by his parents Mr and Mrs Joe Alonzo.
A Bakersfield Saturday evening gathering hosted an informal dinner in with Shafter residents Mr and Mrs John Peters Ike Peters Merrill Tho as and Gordon Haycock, sharing an evening out.
Kiwanis members were entertained at a luncheon meeting on Wednesday as Sam Lachenmaier presented pictures from his hunting trip to New Mexico. The program also featured Joe Louis fight highlights and other sport clips. Guests included Brad Baccus of Los Angeles and Dick Prather of Shafter.
Frank Muttart and his mother Rose Muttart of Los Angeles were week end guests at the home of Mrs Christine Roscamp.

Spud shipments remain heavy with U S prices at 2.35 to 2.40 per cwt while local demand stays strong. Traders expect acreage to drop as heavy shipments deplete supply and next week’s output may fall and lift prices. Nationwide harves ts peak at about 1000 cars in ten days with Arizona California and Kern County supply offsets possible.
Funeral services for Gertrude Katheryn Dollinger who died June 8 in Portland Oregon will be held Sunday at 2 00 p m at the Seventh Day Adventist Church with Elder B A Reile officiating She was born February 14 1901 in New York City and taught in New York City and Worcester Massachusetts She is survived by her husband Jacob J Dollinger and a daughter Beth seven relatives and a sister Mrs Margaret Meister of New York City Ja nzen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Fresno reports opening day at Millerton Lake shows bass fishing nearly doubled from last year. A Bureau of Fish Conservation check notes 593 fishermen interviewed, 1 038 largemouth bass and 1 246 sunfish caught, with thirteen limits. Hal Verble of Fresno landed the top fish, a 23 inch ten pound bass, using a plunker.
Residents of Kern Homes Minter Field Housing Unit and Cawélo received free chest X rays on June 9 with 64 X rays performed by the Kern County Tuberculosis and Health Association Incorporated. Mrs Elster M Ragdle led the effort with help from a list of volunteers. the unit was set up at Shafter and will X ray all residents on June 11 and 12.
