The 1936 Shafter Spud Carnival opens at 5 p m Saturday June 13 under the Wednesd Afternoon Club banner on the grammar school grounds. A big amateur circus vaudeville and boxing card follow with a $5 prize for best act and a 9 pm dance featuring Alvarado's Rumba orchestra.
Two thousand one hundred thirty-two carloads of potatoes left the Shafter depot of the Santa Fe for this ring. Total onion shipments for the season reached 254 cars, with 85 carloads of potatoes shipped Tuesday and one car of prunes bringing prune totals to seven cars. The report notes heavy truck shipments and a three-fourths dug potato crop yielding two-thirds of the yield, while prices hold around three dollars, still profitable.
The state personnel board announces examinations in June and July for civil service posts. Positions include equalization for men 27 to 50 at 225 dollars monthly, a financial research technician 25 to 50 men at 260 monthly on July 11, a July 25 test checker for women 18 to 35 at 40 cents hourly, and a senior dental intern open to all genders with date to be set. A Sacramento AP dispatch notes Shafter Kern county California potato growers are thriving on high prices from United States No. 1 stock at $3 to $3.15 per hundred pounds, up from 80 to 90 cents last year. The report cites strong quality, light old-stock supplies, and broader national attention as the crop increases market demand despite lighter rain in eastern districts.
Jake Neufeld, a well known Shafter barber, will join the Richland school board after last Friday's election. He was the sole name on the ballot and received 216 votes, defeating O E Wiedmann who had 19. Harry West led high school trustee votes with 143, while T N Harvey received 125 and Roy Loudon 29 and Meta Sheldon Lange 20. West and Harvey were re-elected district wide by a large margin.
The 1936 Agricultural Conservation Program has advanced in Kern County with work sheets filled for about 525 farms. Panama community accounts for 114 sheets, Weed Patch 81, and Marines is third with a number not fully stated.
A fund drive for the local Boy Scout movement begins this week in Shafter with a quota of 200 dollars set. The campaign encourages liberal contributions to support scouting activities and programs.
A. R. Duehren leads Kern County Hospital League in urging friends to sign petitions circulating to place the issue before voters at the general election. Petitions are at the Duehren Store Shafter Warehouse and through E. C. Eckmann. The drive seeks to open Kern General Hospital to taxpayers as well as indigent patients after a court ruling closed the doors to payers.
The alfalfa growers of Kern County will hold a general meeting in the supervisors chamber at the county courthouse on Friday June 12 at 1 30 p m to hear and discuss the hay markets for the present and future. Mr Dan Cameron of the Federal State Market News.

Potatoes in Fort Collins Colorado advertised by a Shafter merchant as a bargain at six cents per pound. The Daily Bulletin reprinted the ad and a copy was received by F L Kinyon a Shafter rural mail carrier passing through Fort Collins en route to Pawnee Nebraska for a visit. He reports Shafter is well known in the region and that his party enjoyed a fine trip.
More than five hundred grower worksheets have been filed with Kern County Agricultural Conservation to join the 1936 program. Committees meet across the county. Shafter hosts June 16 at the Legion Hall with sessions 9:00 to 5:00. Other meetings include McFarland Panama and Rosedale venues June 15 16, and Weedpatch Arvin June 19.
The Kern county grand jury report declares jails in Randsburg Taft Maricopa Arvin Wasco Delano Kernville and the juvenile home inadequate for current demands. The body cites a need for more space and better facilities for inmates and youth housing.
The Kern County Historical Society releases its second annual publication by Shafter author F. F. Latta titled El Camino Viejo a Los Angeles. The work details authentic routes through the San Joaquin Valley with pioneer statements and notes. Latta is re installed as recording secretary at the Bakersfield society banquet.
Federal funds applications for a Shafter sewer system have been corrected and forwarded through agencies. Notices have been posted with the state board of health and a hearing for formal protests is set for June 16.
A long felt want is filled as Dr. Taylor Tabb opens dental offices in Shafter. He has practiced in Gilroy for sixteen years and locates in the Duehten building with up-to-date, well-equipped quarters.
The Vacation Bible School at Maple School hosts over 100 students with four active departments and a fifth likely as classes expand. Instructors Rev. Wm. J. Bestwater Miss Mary Fast Miss Laura Frantz and Mrs. Ed. Peters lead eager, engaged groups. The two week program runs to completion.
