A record attendance marked the Spud Carnival held by the Wednesday Afternoon Club on Saturday. The program, presented as advertised, featured a circus amateur hour boxing bouts and a grand Spud Dance. All activities took place on the newly lighted school recreation grounds showcasing the district's new lighting system.
A postnatal baby shower honored Roger Lee Gaede at Kern Academy cafeteria. Guests offered advice on child training, music and readings enhanced the event, with punch and cake served. The season opener in Shafter featured the Shafter Cleaners against McFarland. The teams met in a softball contest with both sides competing to start the season with a win.
To Camp Nelson F F Latta and family spent the week end at Camp Nelson enjoying leisure time together.
Albert Graves Wishon longtime leader of the San Joaquin Light and Power Corporation dies at his Huntington boulevard home after a months long illness. He was 77. Funeral services will be held at the Wishon home on Huntington boulevard and Sixth avenue at 10 o clock Saturday morning June 20.
A Wasco marriage was held at the Baptist church Tuesday evening as Cornelius Siemens of Shafter wed Olga Gromer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gromer. Siemens, once a Shafter youth and Bakersfield High School teacher, plans study at the University of California to pursue a fellowship and a Master's degree.
J. H. Porterfield of Shafter high school faculty will direct music and campfire programs at the Kern County YMCA summer camp at Portuguese Meadows this summer. Staff includes Rev. Ray Anger of Ontario chapel service Harold Britain nature study N Mesmer woodcraft Henry Hoelling model airplane R E Gribble athletics Paul Bunch leather craft and Harry Burton commissary. Cabin leaders include Joe Lynch Paul Lynch Art McFarland Ed Waldmer Glen Tanner William Neill Herb Evans with more to be named. camp runs June 27 to August 1 for boys and August 1 to 22 for girls.
Approximately $30,000 in bonds was paid to World War veterans of Shafter by Postmaster Lois Berry on Tuesday night. Glenn O Nay, past commander, said the remaining bonds would arrive soon and all veterans’ compensation would be paid within ten months. Veterans who received adjusted certificates took one-third to one-half in cash and planned to hold the rest as possible.
The Anglo California National Bank of Bakersfield promotes banking by mail in The Shafter Press. Assistant vice president Harry J. Diller visited Shafter to explain the service, calling it simple and convenient. He noted several county residents already use the plan.
The county is drilling a 12 inch well at the transient camp south of Shafter. T. V. Little holds the contract to equip the site with a pumping plant.
Mrs. F A Ruhlman leaves the L E Plymale residence after a winter visit and heads east to Portsmouth Ohio aboard Santa Fe trains. In Angel City Mrs M Harris Mrs J P Harris and son Richard are visiting relatives and friends in Los Angeles.
Cleve Skaggs has rented the recently completed Beck er home in the Camp tract. The move marks the first occupancy of the new residence in the development.
Henry Schnidt made a trip to Los Angeles on Tuesday, noting the visit as a routine travel moment in the regional news roundup.
The University of California will renew the services of Gordon Smith at the Shafter Experiment Station for another year. His study shows many insects attacking cotton also threaten other crops, prompting continued UC support praised by Kern county farm officials and the Farm Bureau.
Farm adviser M A Lindsay reports two more years of potato scab research. Trials used Calomel at 3.3 pounds per nine tenths of an acre. Some scabby potatoes remained in treated and untreated plots, and no proven control method is yet available for clean potato production.
Post Office Inspector Switzer announced bids are invited by July 6 1936 for leasing or building new quarters in Shafter California to house a 1200 square foot post office. Preferred occupancy around September 15 1936 with possible earlier or later arrangements, aiming for modern facilities to serve a growing city.
A meeting of unusual interest to potato and onion growers will be held at the Shafter Experiment Farm on Tuesday June 23 at 2 p m. Farm advisor M A Lindsay announced the event. New onion varieties and two new potato varieties will be shown along with demonstrations of potato treatments.
The Chas. V. Hitchcock garage on Lerdo road is being remodeled into a modern store building occupying the front of the lot. When finished it will house a full auto parts stock and the garage department.
Shafter High School reports peak enrollment of 221 for the just completed year under Principal E. P. Jones. Average daily attendance hit 182.88, up from 167 last year, though flu reduced a month’s figures. Opening enrollment was 211 and closing 194 with monthly ADAs listed. Preparations anticipate a 15 percent term increase this fall with about 80 freshmen and a smaller incoming class.
To Convention E P Jones leaves Shafter for Portland Oregon soon. He will attend the National Education Association annual convention with his family and plans to be away about three weeks.
Louis Bradley of Fresno was acquitted of vagrancy after a jury trial in Shafter. He defended himself before Justice of the Peace F. E. Manuel as Warren Stockton prosecuted and William Lachen was jury foreman. The case drew large public interest and moved to the Legion hall to accommodate spectators.
