Camp West Lowe riders won the top prize in the silver mounted equipment division at the Visalia Rodeo parade. The council discussed and awarded a garbage contract to Roy Paslay of Shafter who has existing equipment and has hauled garbage independently. Ordinance 17 and building laws were reviewed to decide on removing camps and tents, with fire hazards and lot burning rules to be addressed by state forestry officials. A police signal gong and telephone were chosen for Central avenue as the preferred warning device.

Funeral Service For Shafter Girl
Funeral services were held Sunday at the German Seventh Day Adventist Church for Dona Jane Abbott five year old daughter of Mrs Geraldine Abbott who died in a Bakersfield hospital after a two month illness. Rev Flory conducted the service with arrangements by Janzen Funeral home. Mrs Flory and Mrs Thiesen sang. Interment was in Shafter cemetery. Alfred Harrell to Address California Publishers Group in Shafter
Alfred Harrell pioneer Kern County newspaper man and Bakersfield Califormian owner will deliver the principal address at the South San Joaquin Valley Unit meeting in Shafter on Saturday evening. He started as a teacher, served as Kern County superintendent of schools for 12 years, acquired the Bakersfield Californian in 1897 and grew it into a four page daily with 300 subscribers. Harrell will speak on early journalism in Kern County, with plans for local visits and a chicken dinner at the American Legion hall for publishers and spouses.

Superior Spuds Drills Geisinger No 3 in Shafter Field
Superior Oil Company, leading operator in the Shafter oil field, spaded its Geisinger No. 3 well Monday night raising total active wells to five with five others on production. The new site lies 1650 feet north and 336 feet east of the west Section 35 28-25, marking the northern limit of today’s field. Grading began ten days ago and equipment moved from Wagner No. 3 to rig the new derrick as drilling targets Vedder sand, a heavier producer, with deeper structure expected to shape future field trends.

New Fire Department Headquarters Nears Completion
Shafter prepares to occupy its new fire department headquarters this week or next at Santa Fe Way and California Avenue. The 90 by 60 foot adobe building will house two fire trucks with room to expand, includes living quarters, a warden office, and may feature hose racks and landscaping. Warden Craig notes future additions and Jack Hare will oversee county agricultural inspection operations from the site.
