Services honor those who gave their lives in Shafter
The Shafter American Legion Post 213 conducted memorial services at Shafter Cemetery honoring World War I and other veterans. Roland Graves, 84, of the Yankee Division, shared his experiences from Belleau Wood to Hill 193, including his 1918 wounds and long journey back to the United States aboard the Rhyndam.

Richland Summer School Aims at Remedial Seventh Eighth Graders
Dr. Vera Stone, Richland Superintendent, announces remedial summer programs for seventh and eighth graders who did not pass reading writing and arithmetic tests. The five week session runs June 20 to July 22 from 8 30 a m to 1 p m with a minimum enrollment of 22 students. Proficiency labs and targeted reading and math instruction will be provided.

Principal Gerald Dann Dies at 48
Richland Junior High principal Gerald Dann died May 26 1983 in a Santa Paula hospital from cancer. He was born June 29 1934 in St Paul Minnesota and came to Shafter in 1982 from Southern California. Richland District mourns his loss while establishing a memorial fund to support junior high projects and needs.
