RLSD to Launch GATE Math and Science Program This Summer
Richland Lerdo School District starts a gifted and talented program focusing on science and math for grades six through eight. Director Clare Lockridge reports 46 referrals, with testing to select top five percent for an eventual 30 students. The program will provide direct instruction and research skill work after school, amid district policy on identifying and serving students with extraordinary capacities.

Senior High awards assemble honors 63 students
Family friends presenters and seniors gathered in the Shafter High School auditorium on Wednesday May 29 for the annual Senior Awards program. Richland student earns spot in All Southern California Honor Choir
Richland Junior High student Kathy Oesterle is named among 100 singers chosen for the All Southern California Honor Choir, marking the first Richland entrant in the history of the program. Vocal teacher Mark Reppert notes her four years of work, taped audition, and music reading tests as key factors. Her prior honors include four years in Kern County Honor Choir and an excellent rating at the California Music Educator's Association Solo and Ensemble Festival.

California Lottery reports its financial impact on education
The California Lottery released an informal 1990 financial report showing sales would rank high among Fortune 100 firms and that education would receive the top profitability share. The act allocates 50 percent to prizes, at least 34 percent to public education, and up to 16 percent for retailer commissions and operations. Education funds are distributed quarterly to 1,023 K–12 districts and public colleges and universities based on student enrollment.
