New Bank Manager Takes Over

James V. Cosgrove, manager of Bank of America in the area for two years, is promoted to assistant manager at the expanded East Bakersfield branch. He will be succeeded by Philip Clarkin, formerly assistant cashier at Paso Robles, who starts his duties midweek. Cosgrove departs for East Bakersfield next Monday. Clarkin, born in Redwood City, began banking in 1926 and has held roles across the statewide institution, including Paso Robles since 1946.

Spud Season Reaches Peak as Shafter Shipments Grow

Shafter's 1948 potato season nears peak with over 2500 cars shipped and daily shipments above 250. Twenty two of twenty three sheds in operation, J H Maurer shed to start by weekend. U.S. No 1 prices steady at 2.65 to 2.70 with potential market strength as season advances. Dust storm and cool weather slowed field work but overall outlook remains favorable for a strong season.

Shafter High School Seniors Receive Diplomas

A class of 69 seniors graduated at Shafter High School with remarks by retiring Kern County Union High School District trustee member Phil Channeson. Class president Minor Rootes and Opal Evans spoke on leadership and education. The ceremony featured performances by the school band and girls glee club and awards to Joyce Bender, Leland Kroeker, and Opal Evans.
