Businessman's Sudden Death Shocks City
Devoin Carson McWhorter 47 of 580 Willow Street died suddenly of a heart attack in the early hours last Saturday. Rosary and funeral services were held at Agee Family Funeral Home and St. Therese's Church with military honors at reenlawn Memorial Park. He owned Meers Jewelry Store at 535 Street and was a World War II veteran with prior service in the National Guard and Army. Survived by his mother Rosa McWhorter and sisters Evelyn McDonald and Evelyn Hodges, with grandchildren Debbie Dixon, Roger, Michael, and Teresa Koontz.

Radarman First Class William C. Harris USN son of Mr and Mrs Floyd Harris of Shafter California served aboard USS Princeton LPH 5 in the largest combat amphibious operation since Inchon. On May 7 elements of the Fourth Marine Regiment and Third Recon Battalion landed at Chu Lai Republic of Vietnam to provide airfield security and relieve South Vietnamese troops.
