Shafter Rotary Club Designated in 400 Group

The Shafter Rotary Club was designated in a 400 group for its work with The Rotary Foundation promoting international understanding. Since 1947 the Fellowship program has funded 1700+ awards in 69 countries, averaging $2600 each. Seven California students were selected for study abroad in 1962 63, including William Bischoff Fresno and Barbara at Paris.

Cadet Class Trains 80 Recruits For California Patrol

Highway Patrol recruit William Jenkins of Shafter begins a 16 week cadet training. A 1952 Shafter High School graduate, Jenkins is married to Rosie Guenther and they have a three year old daughter Kelly who will stay in Shafter during training. The 80 man class represents recruits from across California and will continue through the curriculum.

Shafter Fire Responds to Two Calls Shortly After Incident

Shafter fire units attended two calls including a trailer home fire at 124 West Orange causing 200 dollars in damage. Bary Sigler of Wasco had vehicle brakes catch fire at Hemingson corner on Central Valley Highway Monday.

Fair Housing Bill Heads For Vote In Legislature

The 1963 California legislature considers AB1240 by Assemblyman W. Byron Rumford to ban housing discrimination based on race creed or color in sales and rentals. CLIF executive director Robert D. Banks Hurt In Accident Near Blackwell Corner

Mr and Mrs Marvin Bud Banks and daughter Radonna 14 are in North Kern Hospital Wasco after a Sunday crash west of Blackwell corner. Mrs Banks slowed for a car in front then found she was overtaking too fast and struck an embankment. A following car rear ended the Banks vehicle as a third car occurred.

No Action Reported in Taylor Case

DA reports no action had been taken in the Lawrence Taylor case charging resisting arrest. Incident occurred the night of July 7 involving reserve policemen Alvis Smith and E. C. Williams. A tentative municipal court date was set but may be changed by Deputy DA J. G. Volz.

Missionary Reverend Fox to Speak Sunday at Shafter Assembly

A former French colony in the Upper Volta republic will host Reverend Fox from the Assemblies of God for a Sunday talk at Shafter Assembly of God Church on Tulare Street. Fox, stationed in Ouagadougou since 1959, has chaired AG work and advised the president of Upper Volta AG. He previously led evangelistic campaigns in California and Missouri and holds a BA in theology, with studies at several institutions.
