Procedural steps begin to implement a surplus water program in California. The plan aims to curb overdrafts by delivering water from the California Aqueduct to irrigators in Kern County and the San Joaquin Valley. It envisions price adjustments and short-term use before major works are built.
Richland School District fire will be in the next issue of the Shafter Press. A hearing on the district budget is scheduled for 7 30 p m Monday August 5 at the district office on Avenue. The general fund shows a 57024 decrease with 57000 moved to an undistributed reserve for the 1963 64 year. Clarence Neuman, board president, reminds patrons of money raised from local sources.
The request to rezone Lots 8 and 9 in Block 1 of E. P. Grant subdivision from A1 to C2 was withdrawn at the hearing. The plan sought a mortuary on the property and was one of several mortuary proposals discussed.
The city council approved a resolution to meet state requirements for $1,000 in engineering funds for Walker street improvements. They also authorized curb breaking and driveway installations at 135 Stone, 1130 Weyand Way, 1176 Weyand Way, and 1190 Weyand Way. The meeting included discussion of ordinance codification and a new filing system as part of the budget, plus rock dust for streets at $1.56 per ton and notes on lighting upgrades on Central Avenue near Kern Street.
Announcement reports Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hemingson buying the building once home to Food Banks market from Jake Neufeld. The structure was built in 1919 by Charlies Shomate for Wi and Midgley department store origins.
A new case filed by the district attorney charges Law rence Taylor with resisting arrest. Deputy DA J G Volz filed the complaint on July 16 in Bakersfield justice court. Taylor was arrested by Alvis Smith and E C Williams of the Shafter reserve police after a 2 AM incident on Shaw Street.
A national panel of leading insecticide scientists studied the Shafter Cotton Experiment Station’s work. John Turner, director, and other station personnel discussed entomology research with colleagues from UC Berkeley and Riverside.
Shafter with 7 students achieving straight A’s marks under 1 percent of the student body. Michael Dean and another student had perfect records. The semester honor roll includes 153 students, with 92 girls and 61 boys among them, across 4 grades and a mix of freshmen through seniors.
Lerdo School District will publish its annual budget next week showing $160 805 to be spent in the coming year versus $153 608 this year. Local funds drop from $120 363 in 1962 63 to $113 540 in the new budget. A hearing on the budget including cafeteria accounts is set for Tuesday August 6 at 8 p m at Lerdo School.
County Health Officer D T Boyd notes a sharp rise in illegal dumping in Kern County. Sanitarians report more dumping incidents and warn property owners face prosecution under sanitation laws if violations continue.
A petition presented to the Kern County Union High School board requests removal or reconsideration of a slang dictionary from the library. Mrs Bertha McCall leads the Women's Protective League in presenting the petition amid diverse audience views. Trustees reaffirm library selection policies noting the book is not in member libraries and not deemed suitable. In other business the board pays tribute to former County Superintendent Jesse D Stockton and approves a sabbatical for Miss Alice M Nunes.
