Turner reports rise in Valley cotton yield at seed meeting
Turner told growers and gin owners at the annual California Cotton Seed Distributors meeting that per acre yields in the San Joaquin Valley rose about 50 to 60 percent over the last decade while spinning quality improved 15 to 25 percent. He credited variety improvements for much of the gain and called for continued research valued at tens of millions to sustain progress.

Home Damaged By Fire In Shafter And Other County Incidents
A motorist reported a house fire at Kern County Fire Station in Shafter on Monday at 9 22 p.m. The Cave Muir farm tenant house two miles east of Central Valley highway suffered about 3000 damage while tenant Curtis Daniel was away. Fire crews from Kern County Minter Field and Wasco fought the fully involved five room wooden structure. Additional county fires included a grass fire on PG&E property at Los Angeles avenue and Shafter avenue at 10 2 a.m. Thursday, a tractor fire at 18445 Poplar avenue Friday at 1 52 p.m. damaging the Johnson owned tractor used to plow cotton with gasoline leak listed as probable cause. At 2 50 p.m. Monday Arnold Koehn reported damage about 200 to the departing crew.

Shafter youths arrested by McFarland police for burglary were released to the sheriff's office. Officers Leonard Anderson and Eugene Eoff took Jackie Dale Krigbaum, 19, and Ronald Gene Jackson, 21, into custody after a service station attendant reported the pair was trying to sell tools. The tools worth about 200 dollars were from the Wasco Shafter division of the California Land Company.

Gaede Announces Run for Shafter Justice Court
Harvey Gaede announces his intention to file for the Shafter Justice Court in the county building district. The election is set for June 2, 1964. He passed the judicial exam July 20 in Yolo County and says he wants to work with youth. Gaede serves as Shafter mayor and has lived in the district 42 years. He is married with a son Kenneth returning to UC Santa Barbara after military service.

Two Car Fires Reported Near Central Valley Highway
The Shafter Fire Department battled two burning autos within 24 hours at Central Valley Highway and Central Avenue. Police logged the 9:10 a.m. Wednesday report. The 1956 Chevrolet sustained about 200 dollars in damages. drivers included Travis Chance of Pixiey, with firefighters Vernon Pierce Ralph Baehr and Hackett responding.
