Season Ends For 1941 Potato Harvest
The 1941 potato harvest closed with 4371 carloads shipped by rail and many more truckloads. The season began in late April and lasted about three months, one of the longest in local history. Sheds for washing and grading are shut, and growers report yields per acre were lower than some years though prices stayed around a dollar per sack. Blight appeared early but was controlled by aerial dusting. ringrot remained limited. Growers plan for 1942 planting season.

Bakersfield aviator recounts 4600 mile trip to Minnesota
Norman P R Thompson told Shafter Rotary members at Motel Cawelo that he piloted a Stinson Voyager from Bakersfield to Minnesota and back, covering about 4600 air miles in 49.5 hours with costs only slightly higher than first class train and Pullman fare. Edwin Superman of Maxwell Kansas sang with his wife accompanying, and guests included Dr Paul Marling Nenuty Ghorise Jerry Leake and visiting Rotarian Fisk Harlow. Ira Unruh presided.

Mr and Mrs Menno Siemens returned Monday from a two week trip visiting friends in Kansas then Michigan where they took possession of a new car for the return journey. They traveled east to Shafter to home.

Thirteen New Homes For FSA Unit
John Spencer announces thirteen new permanent homes will be built at the Shafter Farm Workers community with start soon. Each house includes one third acre of garden ground and utilities paid, at a minimum $8.20 monthly. Total permanent houses will reach 63 after completion with screening of tent platforms and insect screening on walls and roofs to improve sanitation and reduce wind damage.

Housing Survey Aims to Improve Rural Fire Protection
Art Craig announces completion of a Shafter area survey to number rural dwellings like city houses for quick location of fires. Funeral Service Held For Rio Bravo Woman Christiana Chornegal
Funeral services were held Tuesday for 89 year old Christiana Augusta Chornegal at Janzen chapel. Born in Oslo in 1852 she came to Chicago on an early trans Atlantic voyage and had lived in Rio Bravo since 1925. She left two daughters Mrs E B Suydam and Mrs Birdie Holbrook Los Angeles a Norway born granddaughter and eight grandchildren.

A woman reported a theft of a black cowhide purse containing 200 dollars while at a Shafter tafe. Constable John C. Reily said officers were investigating and there were several days of effort in the case.

Theft Charges Bring 60 Day Sentences
Grenville Evans Jr. and J C Ford, both in their early twenties, were arrested by Constable John C Reily on theft charges for stealing a large tarpaulin. They told differing stories when questioned and were sentenced to 60 days in the county road camp. Reily cited California Penal Code Section 485 on found property and restoring it to the owner.

Fishermen report two limits of Kern River trout

Defense Houses Built To Last For Sixty Years At Cawelo
The Kern County Housing Authority acts for the Federal Works Administration to build 85 defense housing units at Cawelo for married service members and civilian workers during the emergency. Rentals will cover costs and no government subsidy during the defense period. After occupancy shifts to low income families, subsidies begin. Ida Daniel Rites Held at Janzen Chapel
Funeral services for Mrs. Ida Daniel were held Monday at Janzen chapel with burial in Shafter cemetery. Born October 15, 1885 in Oklahoma, she had lived in the Shafter district for two years and died July 26 in Kern General Hospital.

Depth 11 534 feet with 31 feet of oil sand penetrated and flow 462 barrels per day through a 12 64 inch choke. Pasadena Realty Co No 5 spudded 17 July. Vale moving to GaWillin Nevada location.
