The Smith brothers will host a Friday August 1 piano duo concert at Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church, 400 Kern Street, 7 p.m. The city-wide National Night celebration is August 5 at Mannel Park from 6 to 10 p.m. activities for youth as a drug and crime free environment. Shafter High School offers free athletic physicals for returning 10–12 graders August 6 at 5:30 p.m. at the Dean's Office. Elma Handel Wilson longtime Shafter figure dies at 89
Elma Handel Wilson, member of Shafter High School’s first graduating class of 1931, died at 89. Born November 14, 1913 in Lodi, she moved to Shafter in 1919 with pioneer parents F W and Katie Handel. She married Harlin P. Wilson in 1936 and raised two sons on the family farm. She was active in local clubs, PTAs, and church, and served as Richland PTA president in 1952. Her survivors include seven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
