Shafter and Kern County Agree on City Planning Contract
The City of Shafter and Kern County approved a planning contract to form a master plan for Greater Shafter. The project allocates 30 percent city and 70 percent county funding, with work led by county planning staff starting immediately. The study covers land use, population and economic trends, and a 1–3 mile radius for future residential, commercial and industrial development.

During April May and June 15 295 persons joined activities at the Shafter Aquatic center as swimmers or spectators. Roy Farrell recreation director notes participation rose by more than 3 000 from last year. Rio Bravo pool rose from 4819 in 1957 to 5556 this year. Landowners to gathering for Rosedale Rio Bravo Water District forming meeting
Landowners in the proposed Rosedale Rio Bravo Water Storage District south of Shafter plan a meeting at Greeley School on Monday night August 4 to prepare the final steps for creating the 45 000 acre agency. Paul Enns chair says enough owners have signed and met state valuation requirements and the committee aims to file petitions with the state Department of Water Resources in September. Kenneth Wegis will address the importance of water districts and local efforts to bring more water to Kern County. All landowners and the public are invited.

Landowners to decide fate of Semitropic Water District
Landowners west of Shafter and Wasco will vote August 12 on the Semitropic Water Storage District to form a 225000 acre district divided into seven divisions. A June 10 Wasco hearing found the project practical and feasible. The board will have ten years to prepare plans with assessments capped at one dollar per acre until plans are approved.

Young vandals damage windows and doors at local schools
Five youths were picked up by Shafter police for vandalism at primary and elementary school buildings. Two boys ages 10 and 11 admitted breaking glass from twelve firebox windows and using extinguishers, and scratched obscene words on twenty doors. Later, three more boys damaged several elementary school windows before being arrested.

Mrs. Fred Mason is appointed as the new librarian at the Shafter branch of Kern County Free Library succeeding Mrs. Effie Wedge who served 33 years. Shafter Swim Club Dominates Kern County Meet Highlights
Sharon Peters and Philip Anderson lead Shafter Swim Club to top honors at the Kern County Swim Championships held at Rio Bravo Pool. Peters swept the 14 and under freestyle and backstroke, breaking her sister Verna’s record. Anderson won both backstroke and the 16 and under combination relay. Relay teams across 10 and under and 14 and under divisions also claimed firsts as other Shafter swimmers set marks.

Final rites held here for Wasco rancher Petker
Funeral services for Thomas Leo Petker 51 of Wasco were held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Mennonite Brethren Church in Shafter. Petker died July 23 when his car overturned after a collision with a vehicle driven by James Lister of Shafter. Interment followed at Shafter Cemetery. Born March 15, 1907 in Hinton Oklahoma, he had lived in the county 46 years. He is survived by his widow Rosella B. Petker a son Robert M. Petker a daughter Morma Steward his mother Helena Cook and grandchildren. Arm strong Mortuary handled arrangements.

Hofman outlines tentative land development plan in Shafter
Ernest Hofman presented a proposed subdivision located north of Tulare Avenue between Acacia and the Siemens Bartel Annexation. The plan features curvilinear streets and 83 large irregular lots aimed at efficient land use and a unique, attractive project. City officials discussed algae risk and fire prevention due to no alleys, but Commissioner Larson and Engineer Reeves endorsed the proposal. more detailed plans will be submitted for approval.

Scout Troop 953 Returns From Camp Kern
Nine Rotary sponsored Boy Scouts from Troop 953 returned last Saturday after a week at Camp Kern on Huntington Lake. Roy Charves of the Shafter Rotary accompanied them as Scout Master. All members held 1st Class or higher ranks. They joined over a hundred scouts from Kern County for merit badges and outdoor activities. Eagle Scout Art Brownell accompanied the group as a junior counselor. Transportation came from several parents.
