For five months Shafter has benefited from a local nonprofit ambulance linked to Bakersfield Hospital. Don Lockler and W Smith purchased a 1957 Chevrolet Station Wagon and equipped it with double gurneys to provide quick, competent care. Community support is needed to keep the service operating.

Death takes E K Grant pioneer resident dies at 79
Ed son Kelley Grant a Shafter pioneer dies July 31 at his home 248 California Ave Shafter after months of poor health following a heart attack. He lived in Kern County since 1910 and served as building inspector for 10 years and as Vic of the Judicial Court for 14 years. Survivors include his wife two sons four daughters and relatives. Funeral services held August 2 at Armstrong Mortuary with interment in Greenlawn Cemetery Bakersfield.
