Shafter youth win county PSA contest on meth dangers
The Kern Stop Meth Now organization sponsored a Public Service Announcement contest for 12 to 18 year olds with posters videos and music. Winners include Jordan and Jaren Rodriguez Alinda McDaniel Tatiana Alanis Adrian Alanis Adrian Benitez Angel Almanza and Viviana Morales. The winning video from Shafter Youth Center shows how one night of drinking can affect a teen's life and aims to deter alcohol use prior to sexual activity.

City honors Shafter martial artists and top student
The City of Shafter honored martial arts students who earned four gold and two silver medals at the Tae kwon do championships in Dallas Texas. They also recognized Shafter High graduate Katherine Neufeld valedictorian of the 2012 class with a 4.5 GPA. Dolores Estrada won first in Girls 11 12 division Gema Rubio and Pearl Chavez won gold in Girls 9 10 division Juan Perez Jr won gold in Boys division.

Shafter VBS and theater camp showcase local youth talents
Shafter Missionary Baptist Church hosted Vacation Bible School with the Bug Zone theme featuring story time arts and crafts insect crafts and music. SHS theater camp produced nine films in nine days under Showdown Stage Company with live show and accolades for top students at Shafter High including Katherine Neufeld and the First in Class Award recognizing sustained excellence across subjects.

Grandmother Joyce Hill and Alyssa Hill perform CPR on Kaden 23 months after he fell into an above ground pool. Officer Luis Pena aided with CPR before Kaden was rushed to San Joaquin Hospital and Memorial Hospital. He woke, was stabilized, and released home the next day with no stated long term effects.
