Aubrie DelaRosa, the reigning Distinguished Young Woman of Shafter, competes at Bakersfield Harvey Auditorium July 26 27 28 in a scholarship pageant for high school juniors. The event features talent interview academics fitness and poise with over 130000 in cash scholarships and 40000 in title money.

Local girl donates hair to Locks for Love tradition
Stephanie Vandiver began donating her long hair in 2008 and this year her five year old daughter Presley joined, donating two ponytails at a Bakersfield salon to help a sick child. The pair spoke of hair as a symbol of care and potential healing.

Renowned theater Camp returns to Shafter for third year
The Shafter High School contacted Showdown Stage Co to bring the renowned theater camp to town. Jamie Stewart and Joey Aguirre helped launch the program with his mother, Mrs Aguirre, who also works with the company. Kenneth Hugo, a former attendee and Shafter High graduate, described his journey from camp in Shafter to work in Los Angeles and back.

Children learn about bugs at Shafter Youth Center
The Shafter Youth Center program hosted a cleanup during the Fourth of July week, gathering multiple bags of litter to beautify the area. Last week the center welcomed entomologist Stephanie Bill from UC Cooperative Extension Kern County, who displayed various insect boards for the children.
