The Shafter Press will run community events at no charge for two weeks in Shafter Scenes. Fundraising events such as bake sales dinners BBQs carnivals and carwashes must place a minimum display advertisement in the paper for one issue to be published in Shafter Scenes for two weeks. The Shafter Rotary Club heard Pastor Mike Kotrla discuss a Tijuana mission trip and announced a $2,000 donation to fund a home-building project for a needy landowner. Meghan Prout, Chapman University psychology major, shared experiences from Costa Rica Leadership Development Training and described leadership, character-building activities, zip lining, waterfalls, and wildlife sightings.
Kern County Sheriff’s Department probes an assault at Lerdo Pre-Trial Facility after an inmate sustained moderate chest and upper body stab wounds. Staff found him in his cell on Tuesday July 24 around 10 30 a m. He received medical aid and was transported to Kern Medical Center. Several inmates were detained for questioning.
Last week the Shafter Youth Center held Animal Week with CALM the California Living Museum visiting Tuesday. The program showcased a chuckwalla lizard desert tortoise pond turtle California king snake great horned owl turkey vulture opossum and porcupine and gave kids hands on lessons about each animal and their habits.
Alexis Alvarado returned from a five day Texas and Barletta Italy mission trip where she served as unofficial translator and helped 22 locals find faith. She raised 4000 dollars herself, stayed in a church with limited amenities, and hopes to journey to Chile someday. Martha Alvarado attended a UC Irvine seminar on Immigration funded by Gilder Lehrman and NEH, toured Olvera Street, and plans to make her school an Affiliate School with access to historic documents.
