Young crop duster dies in Wasco crash near Burbank
David Putnam 24, son of Bill and Mrs. Putnam of 417 Pine St, was killed Thursday morning when his fixed wing Cal-Air A9-9 crashed and burned while dusting sugarbeets near Wasco and Burbank avenues. He worked for Inland Crop Duster Inc. at Shafter Airport, had trained as a mechanic, and held a Reedley College pilot license. Funeral services were held July 23 in Shafter.

Robber suspect arrested in two area armed robberies
Freddie Williamson was arrested on a March Fastrip Market robbery and Wasco Circle K robbery warrants. He faces two counts of armed robbery and was taken to Kern County Jail. Also jailed were Ricky Bales for liquor possession at Five Points and Frank Lerichi after speeding from officers in Five Points. A hanger break in at Meadows Airport caused $1,400 loss.

Miller honored for 35 years in USDA at Shafter Station
Dr. John Miller received a certificate and service pin marking 35 years with the United States Department of Agriculture. A Shafter Experimental Station ceremony noted his leadership in weed control and herbicide adoption replacing hand hoe methods. Miller moved to Shafter in 1954 after serving as Assistant Agronomist at South Dakota State University.
