Shafter Historical Society Forms to Save Depot
A group of 12 citizens formed the Shafter Historical Society on July 12 at Veterans Hall. Stan Wilson is president with Art Kadel vice president, Nina Leigh secretary, and Dwayne Armstrong treasurer. Nine board members were seated. The depot topic dominated discussions as Santa Fe donor terms were noted. Memberships range from 5 to 15 dollars with monthly meetings set for the second Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Veterans Hall.

Allen May Receive Medal for Channel Flight
Bryan Allen of Bakersfield who piloted the Gossamer Albatross across the English Channel on June 12 is to be recommended for a gold medal to be presented by the President. The legislation, co authored by Congressman Bill Thomas, calls for a gold medal to commemorate Allen's historic flight and will fund via bronze copies for public sale.

Special Summer School eyed by Richland Board
The Richland Board of Trustees discussed a potential Special Education summer session from July 23 to August 21, 1979 if enough parents express interest. Pair arrested for assault in Kern County case
Kern County Sheriff s Office arrested Terr ell Chapman 41 of 18606 Shafter Avenue and a 17 year old Shafter male Sunday night on assault and battery. Tommy Russell 30 of 30376 Orange Lane reported being struck by Chapman with a tire iron and the juvenile with his fists. A Shafter man stabbed at a Central Valley Highway farm labor camp and another Shafter man arrested after the incident. Lewis 59 of 1035 Central Valley Highway was charged with Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
