A crowded City Hall chamber filled Tuesday for the Planning Commission meeting over the Roe development in east Shafter. The commission acknowledged the Environmental Impact Report by Roe and formed a committee of Don Zachary Carl Taffern and Earl Lynch to obtain expert help for completing the draft EIR, possibly ready by the August 20 session. Services held for Sam Becker
Funeral services were held Monday for Sam L. Becker a longtime Shafter civic leader who died Friday in a Bakersfield hospital after a lengthy illness. Becker 60 lived in Shafter 55 years operated the Sam L. Becker Insurance Agency 38 years. He was a former city councilman past president of the Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture ex secretary of the Shafter Insurance Board and an active member of the Christian Business Men's organization. He belonged to the Shafter Kiwanis Club 28 years with perfect attendance 21 years and served as president in 1963 and as Lieutenant Governor of Kiwanis International in 1971. He was a Mennonite Brethren Church member 46 years active as Sunday school teacher choir and deacon board among others. He was state secretary of the Gideons for 20 years and served on church and district boards. He was born May 7 1914 in Otis Kansas moved to Shafter at age five and was a descendant of Jacob P Becker one of the founding Mennonite Brethren Church members. He attended Shafter High School Chaffey Junior College and Pacific Bible Institute. He also cared for his yard and garden at 300 Manuel Avenue. Continued on Page 4
