The article reviews Kern County manufacturing and mining, noting a 139 percent rise in manufacturing employment from 1940 to 1963 and a shift toward durable and non durable goods. It cites concentration in food processing, petroleum refining, and machinery tied to agriculture, with high earnings but a smaller mining role despite rising output. The piece foreshadows a later article on government jobs as Kern’s largest new-employment source.
