Airfield Construction Accelerates with New Contract

Work advances at Airfield east of Shafter as Trewhitt Shields and Fisher of Fresno win a 101 388 contract for a hangar and control tower. Runways water and sewage systems progress. field to be occupied by mid August or early September with 85 government houses planned nearby. Supervising authority is Kern County Housing Authority.

Union well on Crites property shows extended westward potential

Production week reports the third Union well on Crites property in Section 28 North Shafter field reaching 11 496 feet with a test flow of 1020 barrels oil through a 22/64 inch choke. The well’s higher formation position suggests possible westward extension toward a fault as future drilling will clarify.

Nationally Known Athletes Stationed Here With Army Air Corps Cadets

Six nationally known athletes join the U S Army Air Corps as flying cadets in Kern County. Among them former USC star Gilbert J Kuhn and boxing champion Laune Erickson. Others include fencer Paul Lauritson and Chinese record holder Patrick Daniels. Cadets arrived July 15 for basic training with groups to be stationed east of Shafter.

Heat Wave Eases After Record 110 At Shafter Farm

After a July 9 high of 110 at Shafter experiment farm temperatures declined through the week and into the present period. Readings show 104 yesterday, 101 Tuesday, 102 Monday, 100 Sunday, 101 Saturday, 103 Friday, and 107 last Thursday with nightly lows from 61 to 67.

Sheriff John E. Loustalot warned swimmers about Kern county dangers after seven drownings this season. He cited Kern River Buena Vista Lake and the lake outlet as treacherous, noting currents can overpower swimmers even where water looks calm. The search for Private Henry S. Shipment from Community Shows Variety Produce Exports

A Shafter district shipment report cites the Santa Fe depot and Agricultural Inspector Jack Hare. Potatoes led with 4 121 rail cars for the season, plus apricots melons onions and peaches. Truck tonnage reached 61 029 sacks of Long Whites 271 reds and 2 194 russets. Prices rose from 1.10 to 1 40 per cwt. No. 1s were scarce as many loads were No 2s. Heat damaged fields prompt rapid digging and washing to finish. Additional week totals include 20 sacks yellow onions 12 tons watermelons 548 crates watermelons 1 817 lugs apricots 26 431 canery lugs apricots 15 251 flats July Elberta peaches and 5 838 lugs Elbertas.

Lachenmaier Accepts Utility District Post

Bill Lachenmaier will become director of the Shafter Public Utility District to complete the unexpired four year term of Oliver Sly. He is to take office at the next board meeting on July 28. The change follows Sly’s resignation on July 8 and affects the district’s two remaining members H Midgley and W H Whitchcock who control filling the vacancy. The Utility board and the city council plan closer cooperation on sewage disposal and water supply as Shafter grows, with joint evening meetings and overlapping board memberships.

Road repair underway east of tracks on Lerdo road

County equipment has been smoothing Lerdo road east of the Santa Fe tracks to the first intersection. The section had roughened recently from heavy potato truck traffic over the past several weeks.

Shafter city council approved a 500 gallon triple combination pump ing engine for 6451 dollars plus tax and charges with a five year lease. Ten bids were reviewed including White and G M C chassis from Van Pelt.
