Vote on Semitropic water district formation set for August
Property owners in the Semitropic area will vote on forming a water district on August 12, with seven precinct polling sites. The decision followed a June 10 hearing at Wasco Veterans Memorial Hall, where two property owners sought exclusion and two sought inclusion. Kern County prepares to open a new golf course on Highway east of Shafter. Designed by Billy Bell Jr. the greens and fairways are complete and ready by mid October. Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Armstrong Mortuary for Harold M. Dial 31 of El Monte who died July 9 in El Monte. Dial, Oklahoma native, lived 25 years in Shafter before moving to El Monte three years ago. Interment was in Shafter Cemetery. He is survived by his widow Geraldine of El Monte, his mother Mrs. Cuma Youell of Shafter, two sons Harold David Dial and William Martin Dial of El Monte, two brothers Robert Dial of El Monte and Jack Dial of San Diego, and half brothers James Taylor Billy Taylor and Fred Hutchinson. Armstrong Mortuary charged.

Cotton Breeding Expert Joins USDA Shafter Station
Dr. Robert J. Miravalle, a cotton breeding specialist, joins the USDA Experiment Station at Shafter. The St. Louis native earned a Ph.D. in plant breeding from North Carolina State College and recently conducted graduate work in Sweden. He will work on the long running cotton seed improvement program with Merrill Lehman, Scott McMichael, and Director John Turner, and plans to relocate with his wife and infant.

Driver Hits Little Girl on James Street
Six-year-old Darle Boyd, daughter of Mr and Mrs Roy Boyd of 304 Marengo St Shafter, was struck by an automobile near her home on Monday night at 8 p m. The driver Jack Leroy Ogle 20 of Shafter said he was traveling 15 to 20 mph and that the girl darted in front of him as he reached for cigarettes.
