Leslie N. Coleman of Shafter leads a volunteer cafeteria effort for the Divine Will convention of Jehovah's Witnesses in New York City at Yankee Stadium and Polo Grounds from July 27 to August 3. With 7,500 volunteers, the operation plans large-scale meals and menus for up to 150,000 attendees, reflecting a years long ministry effort.
Elitha Dobbs of Shafter was arrested July 1 by Officers Witcher and Ware on charges of drunken driving after they spotted her swerving along Central Valley Highway around 10 p.m.
Preparations for the annual Swim Show at Richland Aquatic Center on July 17 include a diving exhibition by Shafter’s top divers led by Fred Houser a former valley diving champion and now Shafter High School teacher. SWID operates from Kimberlina Road managing daily water orders, with 371 hookups and 120 miles of concrete pipe delivering up to 134 cubic feet per second from Friant Kern Canal outlets.
A wave of burglaries and attempted entries hit Shafter this week. Police say juveniles likely responsible, with minimal losses. Victims include Dr. Rodney Wood Floyd Cooper Lou Sutton and Velma Guenther. Items reported stolen include a wrist watch and chewing gum. A red bike with white trim and a Ventura license plate is linked to the suspect.
Secretary Manager Robert Diltz announced that SWID water users must place orders at least 48 hours before delivery. The Bureau of Reclamation will discontinue 24 hour courtesy increases, and the 48 hour rule will be strictly enforced for the rest of the rush season, based on Friant Dam delivery time.

Shafter police officers conducted target practice at the South Shafter firing range last Monday. Patrolman Glen supervised the drills as Chief Hanley Witcher praised him as a top marksman.
Shafter forms its first model airplane club with 13 members split into students and beginners. An August airplane meet is planned. Student officers are Jim Woodard president Steve Ruggenberg vice president and Bob Collins secretary treasurer. Beginners officers are Mike Dalke president and David Woodard vice president.
