Mexican Colony Emerges Near Shafter Amid Growth and hardship
The 1917 1920 migration brought hundreds to Shafter area fields along Highway 46 with El Monte workers Juan Rodriguez and family leading a line of settlers. By 1927 they formed the Mexican Colony on Burbank Street later expanding to about 70 families, building homes, churches, and community institutions while workers faced irregular wages and primitive living conditions.
