A fatal crash in downtown Shafter involving an Amtrak train killed three young girls and drew a crowd that hampered rescue efforts. The bystander spectacle drew sharp criticism as police redirected attention to the victims and traffic. Temperatures in Shafter dipped from the high nineties to the low sixties over the following days.
City Attorney Al Mortimore leveled strong opposition to the Marvin Roe development in east Shafter during a council meeting. He criticized press coverage, defended public input, and called the plan a potential disaster for the community, urging defeat only by lawful means. He also pushed subdivision changes raising minimum lot sizes to 6,000 square feet southwest and 7,500 northeast of Central Valley Highway.
California agriculture posted a record 1973 with gross cash receipts of 7.5 billion and a harvested weight of 44.3 million tons. Kern County led in cotton and potatoes and rank among top producers while Fresno remained the state leader with 833.765 million. Farm gate income rose 36 percent from 1972.
A Farmers Home Administration pamphlet in Bakersfield lists four basic FHA loan requirements for Marvin Roe's housing proposal. It explains eligibility hinges on income, housing need, and ability to meet payments. Howard Holden details adjustments to find qualifying income and loan rates up to one percent with subsidy limits.
Through June 1974 Shafter issued building permits totaling 1,365,589 surpassing the entire 1973 year. A $600,000 Murphy Producte plant permit pushed the midyear total toward a new annual record, with another 169,000 possible in the next six months.
Two single vehicle crashes killed three Shafter women last week. A Wasco driver Margarita Hernandez lost a left rear tire causing the pickup and camper to overturn near Wasco, killing Rita Reyna 42 and her 14 year old daughter Sylvia Reyna of Shafter and Alejandro Hernandez 15 of Wasco, with sixteen others injured. The second crash on Itler Road involved Oralia Hernandez 36 of Shafter driving a Ford pickup at high speed invalidating a stop sign, the vehicle sailed into a railroad embankment, she died en route to Kern General Hospital.
