Kern High School District proposes tax increase and 10 million bond

Tragic Train Collision Kills Three Teens in Shafter
Three teenage girls Linda Rutledge Barbara Ann Jones and Carey Lynn Taylor died when their 1972 Ford LTD was struck by an Amtrak train in downtown Shafter as they pulled onto tracks near Central Valley Highway at 11 50 a m The driver Linda Rutledge 17 of Buttonwillow and her two passengers Barbara Jones 16 also of Buttonwillow and Carey Taylor 17 of Shafter were declared dead at the scene The train traveled 68 mph and dragged the car a half mile before stopping Witnesses said the signals were functioning and the girls did not see the oncoming train Authorities and funeral homes arranged services for the victims.

The Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture sponsor a free Fourth of July program starting with an all star Pee Wee baseball game at 6:30 p.m. The American and National League all stars clash followed by aerial and ground fireworks at 8:30. Woman hospitalized after Richland bus crash
A Bakersfield woman, Karen Robigan, 19, was listed in fair condition at San Joaquin Hospital after a Richland School District bus crash near Lerdo Highway. The bus carried 24 students and two counselors bound for Camp Oki-Hi, driven by Kenneth Berkehire, with the Shafter Recreation Commission supervising. The CHP reported the eastbound bus crossed Freeway 99 around 8:50 a.m. Friday at 30 to 35 mph.
