Council orders no parking signs for big trucks
Shafter city officials move to curb big rig parking by installing no truck zones. Authorized parking remains on Walker Street between Manuel and Poso avenues north of Lerdo Highway and near East Ash and Beech avenues. The council approved the plan after repeated overnight parking on Central Valley Highway and North Shafter Avenue raised theft and safety concerns.

Richland relocates old portables to make room for growth as Sequoia Elementary School near completion. Black Hall Construction bids $501,377 to relocate portables for 2003 2004, with setup, case goods, carpet, and disconnect costs pushing the subtotal to $829,377 and soft costs to about $124,406. Total project cost is $953,783 funded by developer fees from district growth.

Shafter High School Grad Harley Martin Dies Abroad
Harley Martin 70, a 1951 Shafter High School graduate and UC Berkeley alumnus, died in central Asia while on assignment to promote agricultural technology in Azerbaijan. He and his wife Norma, also a Shafter alumna, farmed in Bakersfield before long career postings with Ball Corp and international projects, including work in Cairo and Salinas, shaping ag marketing practices.

World Affairs Seminar trip to Whitewater Wisconsin
SHS students Jana Clutter and a classmate attended the 27th World Affairs Seminar in Whitewater Wisconsin June 15 to 20. Sponsored by Shafter High School Interact and Rotary, the week explored Making Peace Managing Conflict with lectures by journalists professors and doctors on topics from Korea to the Middle East and the Americas. They studied current world problems and discussed potential solutions through Q A and small groups.
