Shafterman Turns 21 After Life Changing Accident
Joshua Sanger marked his 21st birthday after surviving a severe wreck on Thanksgiving week. The Wasco resident, then 20, suffered diffuse axonal injury and paralysis, endured a 41 day coma, and required multiple surgeries and long rehab. His family credits perseverance, faith, and medical care at Valley Children’s Hospital for his ongoing recovery.

Improving Highway 99 for Valley Traffic and Goods
The Highway 99 corridor carries about 109000 vehicles daily with up to 38 percent trucks per Kem Transportation Foundation. The route, a key goods artery, faces pollution and future LOS declines to E or F by 2025 despite planned capacity upgrades. Interstate travelers and local commuters share the corridor, with Bakersfield and Fresno seeing acute congestion at the 58/99 interchange. Built in the 1950s–60s, the highway was not sized for current growth.
