The Richland School Board considered three cafeteria options to improve finances. Option two, involving ticket system changes and potential staffing reductions, drew mixed reactions from staff and parents. The board favored delaying action to August 4 for further input.
The Kern County Board of Supervisors faces questions on cloud seeding, bad checks, mental health funding for offenders, park maintenance staff, and sheriff overtime. Supervisor Gene Tackett will hold evening hearings in Lake Isabella, Shafter, and Ridgecrest after Bakersfield sessions to boost public input. Delano Shafter Northern Oildale gathering is set for July 15 at 7 p.m. in Shafter Veterans Memorial Hall.
Shafter police reported a chaotic Fourth of July with more than 10 arrests. A 17-year-old was knocked down and beaten near Rodriguez Park, and a 17-year-old county resident struck a girl with jumper cables, drawing blood. An arrest list includes Rami Santiago on public drunk charges and a Delano warrant. Police say no formal gangs were involved. Continued on Page 5A.
Dr W T Walls is the featured speaker at the July 17 seminar of the U S Cotton Research Station. Lyle Carter says the public is invited to review research on modifying grower practices for maximum sun use. A 1 30 field day will include short season plantings by Dr Walhood and weed control review by Dr John Miller at the U S Department of Agriculture Cotton Research Station located 17053 N Shafter Avenue.
A large crowd enjoyed a free fireworks display at Shafter High School stadium preceded by baseball and entertainment. Local church band, performers, and a National Anthem singer provided added delight. Merchants’ donations funded the show with Chief Ratzlaff and the Fire Department praised for safety work.
