Richland School District Board Meets to Review Tentative Budget
The Richland School District Board of Trustees met on Monday June 23 to discuss a tentative general fund and cafeteria budget. The budget shows total expenditures and reserve of 2 579 154 dollars, up 95 000 from 1979 80, with projected 1980 81 enrollment of 1 644 students and 76 staff, up 48. The board also postponed action on the Education for Human Sexuality source book amid debate over policy and classroom use. Verl Heiler was reassigned to a new district role, and five migrant summer school substitute teachers were hired. A July 7 meeting will consider the future of the cafeteria program.

Bender Honored by KHSD Kern for Track Success
Shafter High senior Paul Bender was named an outstanding athlete by the Kern High School District board. He won the state discus title with 190 feet 2 inches and set a Shafter Stadium record with 200 feet 7 inches, the longest in the San Joaquin Valley. Bender went undefeated in discus throughout his senior year and earned recognition in district and regional competitions.

Police track stolen checks and truck theft in Bakersfield
Shafter Police traced a weekend of thefts after checks were stolen from the Handel Shed on Commercial Drive and a Brown and Bryant Yard truck was driven through a back gate into Bakersfield where it was found abandoned. Officers identified footprints and a possible juvenile suspect with fingerprints collected for analysis.

Shafter Shuttle Debuts As City Expands Transit Reach
The City of Shafter received the Shafter Shuttle from Wide One Corporation to meet unmet transit needs. The shuttle will largely fund street work, operates five days weekly 8 am to 5 pm with hourly rounds and 16 passenger capacity, and offers 50 cent fares with lower rates for seniors and handicapped. Route deviations aim to aid disabled riders, and a joint powers agreement with the County backs the program, with a second used bus leased as back-up.
