In a bold stance the Shafter Press owners support the editor's choice to print controversial news, rejecting colorless coverage. They argue small towns deserve truthful reporting even if readers react poorly, asserting readers will ultimately get what they deserve.
The Shafter Chamber of Commerce discussed pursuing a federal post office building after Postmaster George Guenther explained new funding options. A committee including Orvin Mettler and Pat Kelly was formed to press Congress for support, while other items included service club staffing, budget notes, and a prospective cotton mill study.
Minter villagers plan to form a volunteer fire corps at Shafter Field following a local meeting. Chief Melvin Parrett led talks on organization, drills, by laws, and equipment handling as a $300 death benefit fund started. Attending Shafter firemen included Chief Parrett and Assistant Chief Kinkbeiner. Minter guests included Captain Dick Miller and several Kern County officials.
Rev Waldo Wiebe pastor of the Mennonite Brethren church was elected president of the Shafter Ministerial Association. Other officers include C F Ummel vice president Bernard E Andrews secretary and O Seago treasurer. Mrs C F Ummel will continue directing the released time religious education program next year.
After decades of effort, Millerton Lake water will be released into the Friant Kern Canal as W. B. Kiggens and G. H. Hogue help open the valves. Governor Earl Warren will speak at the Orange Cove celebration marking completion of half the canal, with Tulare County and Kern County officials delivering remarks and coordinating the project’s progress toward a Bakersfield end goal.
A two car crash near Shafter on the Taft highway killed Mrs Elsie Hahn and her two month old daughter Katherine and injured six others. William Hahn and Barbara and Marilyn Hahn are among the injured with Barbara lightly hurt and Marilyn in serious condition. Drivers David Park and Ivan Meyers were hospitalized along with Lucille Goodrich. The Hahn car skidded and rolled after a rain storm erased skid marks.
The Circle Eight dance group from Bakersfield presents an evening of American Russian Italian and Mexican folk dances including couple square circle and mixer styles. About 80 members will perform under director Dick Heber with Walter Hecks as instructor on the lawn in front of Shafter High School gym at 8 p m.
Glen Nay, retiring president of the Shafter Rotary Club, received the past president's pin and Rotary bookends in appreciation at a regular Tuesday meeting at Cawelo. Dr. Harold new president presented the honors as J. H. Fuller became a new member. Dr. H. E. McClure spoke on conservation and the need to protect natural resources in the San Joaquin Valley.
Mr and Mrs Otto Becker along with daughters Belva and Neva returned from San Jose where they attended the graduation of Mr Richard Becker at San Jose State College on June 24.
Construction of Friant Dam began at the site on February 19, 1937 with a warehouse for the camp. The dam, once the fourth largest masonry structure, is a straight gravity dam 3,430 feet long storing 520,000 acre feet, with outlets feeding the Friant Kern and Madera Canals and the San Joaquin River. Interim water will be priced at 1.50 per acre foot as Class 2 and 3.50 for depend a supply.

Prices ranged from 2.00 to 2.25 per hundredweight. daily carlot and trainload totals are listed for June 27 to July 2, with 6655 carlots overall for the year versus 6688 last year.
James E. Dunkin seaman apprentice USN is set to depart San Diego with Navy Patrol Squadron 42 for routine air sea rescue and reconnaissance training flights off Saipan. He is the son of James E Dunkin Sr of Shafter.
James L. Whicker 88 of Shafter died of natural causes yesterday at General Hospital in Bakersfield. Survived by widow Ella Lena and children Preston Roy Guy Mable Lula May plus 17 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Services at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at Church of Christ with Elder Richard Monroe officiating. burial in Shafter Cemetery. Shafter Funeral Home in charge.
The weather report notes a mild 94 degrees in Shafter with temperatures expected to linger in the mid 90s for several days. A heat spike is forecast to begin around Thursday as highs and lows trend upward.
