Handel goes 4 for 4 with errorless defense as Pee Wee Brown & Bryant topped Dalke Brothers 15-6. Leach Handel Brewer Taylor Jonsnar Samnates Milam Nixon led B and B with early two run and three run bursts to seal the win. Dalke players included McCoy Wilson Hill Dalke Putman Becker Neufeld Devincenzo Waymire.
Jack Hare Lee Thomas and Leslie Robinson joined seven candidates initiated into the Kern County 40 and 8 at the Taft Legion hall after the annual election. Grant F. Clayton heads the 1949 50 term with officers Albert Malouf Wayne Nelson and Tom Swinney. executive committee members include Harold Greene C Marsili George Swinney J Parkes and Tommy Stevenson.
A 2 year old pace for $3000 at Fairmont Park Collinsville saw Adios Hall driven by Roy Funderbur win the first mile in 2 10 2/5 with Mighty Sassy led by Jim Hackett in second. Patchen Axworthy led the final stretch in the Jong clash paying 6.80 4.20 3.20. Golden Broom finished two lengths back in 2.02 4/5 in the co feature driving by Ralph Ayon. Barbara Bristle and Daisy Mc Irwin won the daily double with 243.80.
The Union Congregational Church approves a shortened summer timetable to free worshippers from the mid day heat. Sunday School starts at 9 with service at 9 40 and ends by 10 30 to allow family attendance. The July sermons focus on Psalms of Ancient Israel.
Bakersfield district attorney filed felony charges against Arthur H. Tho of Kern County road camp for escaping the main camp on June 16. Other escapees named include Walter W. Kinds from Isabella camp, Hershurl Phillips of Bakersfield, and Richard Chilson of Taft, with escapes occurring around mid June.
Jessie Lachenmaier, wife of Elmer Lachenmaier, accuses Shafter spud grower and shipper Shafter Spudman of failing to meet a property settlement. She seeks 31 206 damages in superior court and filed for divorce after an earlier reconciliation.
The Shafter merchants division of the Chamber of Commerce announces that stores and businesses will close on Independence Day. Shafter residents are asked to plan the weekend accordingly.
Jack Veach of Shafter was fined $10 Tuesday in Bakersfield Superior Court by Judge Warren Stockton to jog his memory. Veach, husband and father, had probation for three years since January on a delinquency charge involving a 17 year old girl. His case was revived in March for gambling in prohibited venues, and Tuesday’s appearance continued proceedings for possible probation revocation.
The 20 30 club at Cawelo discussed placing residence addresses on front curbs as a curb project. Marvin Lane reported the soft ball team will play Frank Russell boys next Wednesday at Richland Primary diamond. The regular Cawelo meeting was cancelled.
Eight entries have been received for Shafter's Largest Potato contest to find the heaviest spud. Weighed judging determines the winner. bring potatoes to The Shafter Press office. Contest ends a week from tomorrow, Saturday July 9.
Mrs. Donald Bayer reports two swarthy youths about 28 enter 344 Central avenue shop at 10 45 am. One distracts while the other pockets a $295 diamond set from the window. They flee in a blue Ford sedan, no plates. Police Chief John C. Reily says efforts to catch them are under way.
Sherman L. Pabst acting for the Secretary of Agriculture asks Shafter early-crop potato producers and handlers to return ballots for the federal marketing agreement referendum before the June 30 mailing deadline. Slow returns noted. withholding concurrence equals a no vote and the order needs two thirds approval by voters or two thirds by volume. Applies to potatoes harvested and marketed April 1 to July 15.
Dusty Rhoads was installed as president of the Shafter 20-30 club in a ceremony at the Channeson ranch barbecued day. Henry McCallen oversaw installations including Tom Hayhurst as second vice president and Ivan Myers as sergeant at arms with other directors. Seventy five people attended as games and ceremonies filled the afternoon.

Rio Bravo overwhelmed the American Legion 34 to 2 at the Rio Bravo diamond On a night when Rio Bravo substituted freely every player saw action The Rio Bravo lineup featured Calder Scales and Hacker while the Legion fielded Hahn Voth Lynd and Tucker among others Scales pitched well allowing a lone hit and Tony Tucker left with a sprained ankle though no bones were broken Home runs were credited to Rice Hacker Calder and Scales.

Kern county continues rail and road shipments of Long White potatoes as harvest winds down. Rail shipments exceed 30 000, 6000 truckloads have left Shafter with 1500 more expected before the season ends about July 15 after a 75 day run peaking three weeks ago.
Congressman Thomas H Werdel announces that Public Law 105 of the 81st Congress clears the way for a new Federal building and post office in Bakersfield. The facility will house the post office enlarged operations and provide space for other federal agencies now leased in the city.
Spud shipments in the Shafter region shrink with only six sheds still operating and the Rose & Crome packers expected to wind up the season today. Remaining sheds include K. Malory, Lachenmaier with two sheds, J. H. Maurer, Brown & Bryant, D. W. Ferguson, and Jack Hare.
