The Agriculture Extension Service notes 270 578 acres planted to cotton in 1949 in Kern County and reports one of the worst worm infestations since the 1930s. Roy M. Barnes warns of yellow striped armyworm migration from alfalfa and weeds, and advises a continuous 8 to 12 inch DDT dust barrier between infested fields and cotton. Potato shipments in the Shafter area dwindled to 20 on Tuesday 19 on Wednesday and 15 yesterday as Lachenmaier Bros W Ferguson and J H Maurer wound up the harvest. The Shafter fire department answered a stand by fire call to Ca welo to help the Minter Field department extinguish a fire in the tool shed of the S. A. Camp cottonseed mill. County Captain T. L. Kinkaid, engineer Clifford Newell, and fireman Bill Jump stood by the company's kerosene tanks. The blaze was minor and quickly controlled.
