Richard Flanagan chosen for Americans Abroad program
Five years ago Richard Robert Flanagan son of Mr and Mrs Tom Flanagan was selected by the American Field Service to participate in the Americans Abroad program in Maldonado Uruguay. He attends Shafter High School. Kerr County Supervisors vote 3 to 2 to fund the Buena Vista Aquatic Recreation Area project and start the colony. Walter Peterson and Lee Urie join Cotton Research Station staff as John Turner announces focus on safflower production rather than cotton research.

Shafter Highlights: Horizon Club picks and shipping lead
Ten years ago in June 1965 Shafter High sophomores Jeannie Guenther and Kathy Albright were chosen for Horizon Club Conference Afloat to be held in 1966. Shafter led Kern County potatoes shipping with 3958 carloads, ahead of Edison. Shafter police received a Justice Department plaque for peace officer training.

Webb elected NACo president at national counties conference
Vance A. Webb longtime Kern County Supervisor becomes National Association of Counties president for a one year term. He has served NACo since 1971 and chaired its Welfare Steering Committee in 1970 while also leading county groups in California. The NACo conference June 21 25 featured focus on counties in partnership with people and issues like costs land use and waste disposal.
