About 2000 people attended the Shafter High School field on July 4 for free fireworks and a Pee Wee League All Stars baseball game. The National League Stars won 3-2 over the American League Stars in a pitchers duel. Congressthank Bill Ketchum and Mayor Dick Larson presented an official Bicentennial flag to the city, to be flown at City Hall and other public buildings.

Banditos may walk free after 60 days in jail
Four young men nicknamed the B B Banditos from Shafter suspected of firing at cars and damaging property faced Shafter Justice Court. They had served about 30 days of a 180 day sentence with one day suspended and may be released after 60 days if the judge approves a sentence reduction. A new hearing is set for August 1 to consider sentence modification and potential jury trial changes.
