The Shafter Press announces new hires including Mrs Watts to lead front office cleanup and Luke Cooper from Colorado Springs as a linotype operator. The note invites readers to attend July 7 planning commission hearings as Shafter forecasts a rapid growth future.
The Air Force plans a relay radio station at Minter Field with a 191000 cost and a May 1960 completion target. Construction starts in August under Air Defense Command, serving aircraft control and as part of the warning system, with no permanent staff on operation.
Three new local teen contestants enter the Miss Shafter beauty pageant with notes on Phyllis Smith Janice Shaw and Betty Firkins. Mr and Mrs C R Burnquist took three horses to Antioch for the Central Valley Quarter Horse show on June 20 21. The horses had placed high at Bakersfield recently with Silver Torch a three year old filly winning reserve champion at Antioch. The other Burnquist horses placed 2nd and 4th in their classes.
