The Shafter Chamber of Commerce voted to press state or county oversight of farm labor camps after reports the federal government plans to close all Labor Branch camps by September 30 1947 due to budget cuts. 13 camps in the San Joaquin Valley and 11 420 workers would be affected, risking disruption during fall harvests.
Extensive work at the county park is nearly complete with a new sprinkler system of 425 sprinklers and 13 valve units, a seeded lawn, rest rooms, a tool shed, and plans for barbecue pits and tables. The project, built by Dalke Brothers and painted by Shafter Maintenance Co., aims to make the park a popular venue next season once the lawn establishes.
Summer softball standings show Central Market, Dial Cleaners, and Food Town on top with Food Town and Dial Cleaners pressed by challengers. Buttonwillow Girls upset Food Town 24 to 7. Pee-Wee Central Market leads by three games. Hofman Service追 pushes in junior league. Regular schedules list weekly games through mid August with venues Rio Bravo and local parks.
Four year old Carlos Davis, son of Robert Davis of North Government Camp, was struck Saturday morning by a Shafter Ice Plant truck driven by Jimmy Lacy. The boy sustained abdominal injuries but Monday his condition was very good and surgery was unlikely.
The city fire department completed the barbeque pit after a year and a half of work and celebrated with a barbecue on Thursday. Frank Johnson prepared the steaks and sauce and helped with cooking. Attending were city firemen and guests with their families, including P. V. McClure, Vernon Pierce, Frank Russell, Paul Ingraham, Art Kadel, Melvin Parrett, Lincoln Goddard, Al Finkbeiner, Ed Bender, Forrest Newton, Bert Cook, Ned Jenner, Hanley Witcher, Les Reeves, and Jack Dial from the police force.
Plans for Shafter's First Annual Hobby Show at the high school on Tuesday July 22 move along. More than thirty locals with hobbies have been sent entrance blanks and organizers seek more hobbiests to participate. Ray Kitts at Shafter 4611 leads outreach as interest in leisure activities grows.
Jane Weston of Buttonwillow, daughter of Mr and Mrs Harry E Weston, earns a 3.79 grade average on the University of Redlands Spring 1947 honor roll. A Kerr County High School graduate and senior PE major with a history related field, she is in the upper quartile and a member of Alpha Xi Omicron.
Dr. Lloyd Fox of Bakersfield presents color nature and hunting films from the Canadian Rockies and Pacific Northwest at the high school tonight. He is joined by Louis Roux, county fishing expert, for the community night program starting at eight o clock in front of the gym.
Mrs Claude Holland became a grandmother June 21 when her daughter LaVerne Pollock of Fresno presented a new granddaughter. The baby named Nicki Jean was born at Kern General Hospital in Bakersfield. Mother and child will go to Mrs Holland’s home after discharge.
Mr and Mrs Basil Lynch welcome a baby girl born June 26 in Bakersfield weighing 7 pounds 10 ounces. The birth adds a new member to the Lynch family with joyful announcement.
A high school community night on Tuesday July 8 features two parts of Mexican music. Marimba players directed by Leona Forrest Rundstrom of Bakersfield perform seven girls with their own band. Local talent group led by Alex Estavillo promises a strong show for Shafter residents.
Guadalupe Manus was arrested over the weekend for intoxication and reckless driving and for driving without an operator's license. He was scheduled to appear before Judge Shaw.
