Pat Kelly, Rotary International governor for District 106, urges a community wide push to aid youth. He cites Salt Lake City's success, notes Shafter's rapid recreation program growth, and calls for parental involvement and local support to curb juvenile delinquency.
Central Market leads Pee Wee with 10–0 and a 12–6 win over Justesens. Shafter Warehouse upset Brown and Bryant 9–5 to take second. Food Town girls remain atop the girls league after a 28–20 win over Pierce Jewelers despite a 14–6 loss to Buttonwillow. Hofman’s Mobile tops the field as Dial Cleaners falls to Shafter Wasco Gin 4–3.
The week long softball schedule lists games at two diamonds from July 7 to July 14. Teams include Shafter Walmart equivalents and local businesses such as Dial Cleaners, Hofmans, Rio Bravo, Food Town, Emerald Service, Dianne's, Central Market, and Pierce Jewelers.
Mrs. Peter Ohanneson hosted a luncheon and swimming party at the Bakersfield Inn on Tuesday for her house guest Miss Dorothy Betts and Miss Marjorie Coykendall. Guests included Mrs. Horace Gray Mrs. Phil Ohanneson Mary Frances Ohanneson Virginia Frizzell and Phyllis Peters.
A baby named Charlotte Ann Freedman, presented July 2 to Doctor Harold Freedman and his wife, is described as unusually advanced with both upper and lower teeth. The note promises verification from the doctor and hints at her appetite for steaks in a playful tone.
Mr and Mrs John Jacobsen are visiting Oakland and will tour several northern towns before returning home.
Mr. Homer Fry is home from Bakersfield Hospital and recovering nicely from a minor operation.
An inspection of Kern General Hospital highlights modern equipment and a forward looking staff under Dr. Rilcoff who took charge in 1945. The facility showcases a streamlined record system and the new Clinical Recorder while facing liberal admission policies amid ongoing challenges and high patient volume.
Barney Owens led the installation of 20 30 Club officers at Manuel Park in a Sunday barbecue attended by more than 100 members guests and Arvin visitors. New officers include Marvin Neuman president Jim Albright vice president Kenny Howell sergeant at arms Harry Thompson and Harold Miller directors. The event featured a barbecue by Cleve Skaggs and spud donations from Em Mettler Sons Bender Bros Handel families and Neuman Sons. Planting plans for the San Antonio National Convention August 25 30 were announced with spuds and registrations handled by Neuman Handel Malory Granquist and others.
Mr and Mrs Daniel Schnidt hosted a lawn party Friday evening with guests Gene Han and family Jerome Mettler Al Mettler Aduel Mettler Calvin Mettler and family and Herb Mettler enjoying home made ice cream and cake.
The L A Camp Ginning Company in Shafter announced today the opening of its new insecticide division under Jim Camp. Directed by Gordon Haycock the plant will distribute Du Pont insecticides fungicides and weed killers. A local delivery service will ship insecticides for cotton potatoes fruit trees vines and plant diseases to area growers.
Many local stores decided to close for the 4th of July weekend with Friday through Sunday off. The three department stores and all grocery stores will stay open Saturday, along with a few other shops. All local garages and hardware stores plus lumber companies and most auto parts stores will be closed Saturday.
Mr and Mrs Les Hobson spent the week end in the Southland enjoying a short trip and return.
Mr and Mrs Bert Ware depart Thursday for a two week vacation. They will spend a week at Mineral King with their son Tommy visiting his grandmother Mrs Mixter. The second week the family travels to San Francisco.
Doctor and Mrs. Oscar Schaef fer of Cuyama Valley spent the weekend as guests of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Boehnke and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Kirschenmann.
