A month of talks with residents shows expectation of continued rapid growth in California. While many foresee prosperity, housing and road shortages loom. Calls grow for balanced highway funding, local control, and calm to avoid panic and chaos as the state expands.
Four county representatives from Kern Kings Tulare and Fresno attended the Central Valley Highway Association meeting in Fresno as they form a Southern San Joaquin road council to study local road problems. The committee will report at the April 22 Wasco meeting chaired by Speed B Lees with members Woollames Polzin Ingraham. Kern County’s first five mile unit from Wasco to Elmo awaits soil tests while Fresno reports progress south from Selma though right of way issues may require condemnation. Billboards to direct traffic along Highway 99 were approved with costs shared by Shafter Corcoran Wasco and Hanford chambers. Shafter and Hanford members attended.
Tehachapi High travels to Shafter gym to clash with the locals in a decisive Sierra league showdown that will wrap up the first round. The Tehachapi B and C squads also meet Shafter lightweights as the varsity seeks to prove its status as league frontrunner after a 41 16 win over Maricopa and other victories.
The climax of the poster contest titled If It's Shafter Grown It's California's Best occurs today during the Chamber of Commerce regular meeting. Posters have been on display in local shop windows, with final judging by the chamber's poster committee headed by Dr Revell. Winning posters will be shown next week and prize money will be presented at a future luncheon.
Roving correspondent Bill Brown reports Texas windstorms reaching 800 to 120 miles per hour. He and Mrs. Brown are traveling to New Orleans aboard a windy journey.
Elections for two of the five director districts in the Shafter-Wasco Irrigation district are set for Wednesday February 5. Polls open 12 noon to 5 p m. Voters in the two districts may participate. In district two incumbent John J Schroeder and John Nale run set against each other. In district three incumbent Gus Klassen faces Charles Burns. All four are well known local ranchers.
Job's Daughters of Wasco Bethel holds a 6:30 PM Monday dinner at Masonic Hall Wasco with parents and adult friends as guests. The dinner is sponsored by the Council.
The Hudson tract, recently annexed by the city, expands to include the Oliver Implement Company and the Shafter firm Santa Fe south of Lerdo. A new ordinance widens the tract and bans certain uses, while Silas Winters of Arvin seeks to open a used car lot on the vacant lot beside Mer cantile department building if terms are met. The Shafter Public Utility District plans utility work and street lighting and sewage installation once streets are completed.
The Wednesday Afternoon Club meets at 2:00 p m at the club building with Mrs. Charles Ohlsson district VP of the Women’s Federation Pixley to speak on antique glass. The talk is expected to appeal to admirers of old and beautiful items. Junior Club Women receive a special invitation from Mrs Ed Brown club president. Program chairs Mesdames William Bender and A P Channeson. Hostesses Mesdames Paul Newell H C Neufeld O C Meadows and Charles Burns.
Mrs. Virgil Alice Farr longtime Richland School Cafeteria employee is very seriously ill. She was taken to Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield last Friday with surgery following on Monday. She is the sister in law of Mrs. Chris Ummel.
J T Mayo a former Shafter resident now in Kings City is seriously ill with pneumonia His condition is reported gradually improving His sister Mrs Williams and Mrs Gladys Rightnoure traveled to the city to be with him Mrs Williams has returned but Mrs Rightnoure remains with him
Mr and Mrs Daniel Schnaidt announce the birth of a baby girl named Doris Magdalena in Bakersfield on January 16.
Mr and Mrs P V McClure and Mr and Mrs Bert Cook were in Los Angeles last Friday for a visit. The trip highlights social connections and regional travel.
City Council announces a February seventeenth launch for a civic drive to clean rubbish from business and residential districts. The effort includes street sweeping vacant lots and school crossings safety measures with community groups and local officials urging careful driving after a recent deadly accident.
Nominations for Shafter High F F A officers for the second semester were made. Kenneth Buller and Leland Kroeker were named for president with Tom Fletcher and Marvin Kirschenmann as vice presidents. Everett Eyraud is unopposed for secretary and Steve Rodriguez for treasurer. Bob Poznoff was nominated for past president. A snow trip with F H A and Hi V is being planned. election occurs at the next meeting.
John and Sam Lachenmaier finish a mountain lion chase in Southeastern Arizona and New Mexico. Guides and bloodhounds trail two lions. John fires from a tree and Sam from a cliff with a pistol. one lion is captured alive then released. Mrs. Pete Bender hosts a luncheon with Della Mills and E. Fredman as guests of honor.
California motor vehicle authorities remind Southern California motorists that seven days remain to apply for 1947 plates before the February 4 deadline. Penalties include a 100 percent plate fee increase and a 50 percent rise in in lieu taxes for late renewals.
Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Haycock traveled to Los Angeles for several days on a business trip this week and are noted for their stay amid professional engagements.
Jay Bryan Thompson 30 and Arles E. Hand 20 died in a head on collision north of Tulare after their light sedan hit a furniture van and sideswiped a trailer tow. Hand survived by wife Bobby Jean and a baby. Thompson by wife Claudia May and two children. Both families had lived in California years. Janzen Funeral Home arranging services.
Pat Kelly gave the annual Kern County Camp Fire dinner talk at Trinity Methodist Church on the Camp Fire going places theme. He praised Mrs. Joe Frizzell for promoting Camp Fire in Shafter and thanked Mrs. Lowell Todd for leadership. he called Camp Fire a character building group that fosters dependability honesty responsibility and respect for a Supreme Being while stressing fun and tolerance as vital to youth. Mrs. Lawrence Weill introduced him and Shafter attendees included Pat Kelly Joe Frizzell Emil Stoller Lowell Todd William Bestwater and Jack Battaglia.
