Voters in the Shafter Wasco area face a Wednesday election for two of the five district directors. The district seeks a larger area to share Central Valley water costs and aims to secure water rights from the Bureau of Reclamation, with no contract yet in place.
Elmer Hooker was sentenced to 120 days at Industrial County Farm on January 30 by Judge E. K. Grant. The conviction rested on two battery counts. he used force on his three year old daughter and struck his wife across the face with a broom handle.
Lt. and Mrs. William Bristow visited the Ohannesons over the weekend. Mrs. Bristow is the wife of DM Mrs. Ohanneson notes. Lt. Bristow serves in the Navy and is stationed in Honolulu.
Charles Massey of Richland eighth grade won top honors in the poster contest If Its Shafter Grown Its Californias Best sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. Second prize went to Kenneth Cooper with third to Max Tudor Morton Brown and Kenneth Handel. The event judged by Dr Revell drew over 40 posters to the Friday meeting and later to be sent for display statewide.
Richland officials held a mass meeting with 356 students at the school cafeteria to enforce bicycle safety laws after a second near fatality this week. Roxie Tolbert, 12, was dragged 30 feet by a turning dump truck on Shafter Avenue. no lights or reflectors were used. Authorities vow strict enforcement of Ordinance No. 11, sections 16 and 17, disallowing more than one rider per bicycle and requiring front and rear lights.
Construction on the new Richland School addition continues with the foundation and steel frame completed. Delays stem from difficulty securing shingles and tubing, as work proceeds in two wings of six classrooms each, totaling a size comparable to twelve houses and marking one of Kern county’s larger projects.
Mr. and Mrs. Dudley Paslay of Bakersfield were recent dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Paslay.
Posters from Shafter students and businesses fill shop windows. Charles Massey’s winning entry sits in Johnson Neuman Department Store. Richland district runners up are at Western Auto Store with Kenneth Cooper credited. Third place at Home Appliance Co. features Morton Brown, Max Tudor, and Kenneth Handel, 6th graders. Everett Eyraud drew the high school winner at Shafter Mercantile Co.
Ben Stinson a long time Kiwanian and former Bakersfield Kiwanis education chair spoke on the history and purpose of Kiwanis at last Wednesday's meeting at Cawelo Motel. He noted 23 years in Kiwanis and a career starting in Amarillo before transferring to Bakersfield. Guests included Bill Gunnarson Harry Sturm James Hahn J W Brumer Ray Kitts Blake Witcher and visitors Walter K Peterson and Don Kinney.
The Maple elementary school P T A met last Tuesday night. Ben Homfeld presented films showing the F F A trip last summer through western national parks and the Wasco rodeo last fall. Mrs. Howard Nicol presided. Reports by Mrs. C R Sturges and Mrs. A Ehrnhorn covered the January 7 Bakersfield district meeting.
Tom Letizia spent the weekend in Fowler with his family visiting local sights and staying at a nearby residence. The trip showcased a brief family gathering in the town.
Rev. William Hoover of Detroit is the speaker at Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church in Shafter. He recently returned from a Europe relief tour and will lecture nightly through February 9 at 7 30 p m. He has served as relief commissioner for Michigan Relief Inc and represented North American Baptist Association in Europe.
George Riley Thompson, 78, of Smith's Corner collapsed from a heart attack at 3 53 Saturday afternoon at Mun zer and Central. City firemen used a resuscitator for 10 minutes, then took him home via Janzen Funeral Home ambulance after he refused hospitalization. Doctor H W Voth was notified.
Roy Dailey of North Shafter appeared before Judge E K Grant Saturday on a charge of battery and received a sentence of 180 days in jail.
Tehachapi five edged Shafter 31 29 on the local court to close the first Sierra league round with a perfect 6 0 record. Koutroulis led Tehachapi with 13 points while Vic Bender added 12 for Shafter. East Bakersfield then routed Shafter 32 14 as taller visitors controlled the game.
Tomorrow voters in the Shafter-Wasco Irrigation District select two directors for four year terms from divisions 2 and 3. Division 3 incumbent Gus Klassen faces Charles Burns. division 2 incumbent John J. Schroeder runs against John Nale. Polls open 12 to 6 p.m. at Wasco and Ginning Company offices. The board weighs negotiating water with the Bureau of Reclamation as Central Valley project water supply tightens.
Shafter High School drama class presents Nine Girls a mystery comedy by nine actresses in the school gym Friday February seven at eight pm. A matinee for grade school children is set for Thursday afternoon February six with Richland School releasing upperclass students. Tickets are sold by drama class members or at the box office. Mr Burton Filut leads the production.
Reverend and Mrs. Grover T. Owens were recent dinner guests at the Merwin Hunt home announcing their visit with the host couple and their hospitality.
