A community mourns a child killed and another nearly died at Central avenue and Santa Fe Way as residents call for immediate rail and road crossing safeguards. Leaders urge watchers at crossings and schools, constant safety education, strict enforcement against drunk driving, and broad civic campaign.
Charles Howard and Oscar Tucker were arrested this week for drunkenness. Hubert was held for driving while under the influence of intoxicants. Luther B. Crabtree was arrested for petty theft. The case is a bounty matter and given to the constable for handling.
Mrs Emma Mayer who has been ill travels with her daughter Mrs Petty to stay away for several months seeking rest and recovery.
A bicycle truck collision at Santa Fe and Central Avenue in Shafter killed Jerry Parrett nine, son of the city fire chief. Jimmie Waymire survived with minor injuries. Funeral services featured an honor guard of Shafter Fire and Cub Scouts with Rev. Bartel officiating. Jerry, a fourth grader at Richland, was active in Cub Scouts and had lived in Shafter six years.
At a Friday Chamber of Commerce gathering in Shafter the idea of reviving the Spud Festival was explored with the local American Legion as sponsor. Members favored a public parade and a coordinated effort across clubs to plan the event, aiming to brand Shafter as Potato Center of the World.
Mrs. Herbert Anderson of Bakersfield spoke to the Business and Professional Women at Canelo Motel about Mexico, focusing on Mexico City. She described extremes in climate and wealth, modernizing women led by Senora Obregon, and a mobile eye clinic to fight unnecessary blindness.
The Department of Motor Vehicles reminds Shafter vehicle owners to file 1947 plate applications by next Tuesday to avoid penalties. After February 4 midnight, penalties equal to 100 percent of the registration fee and 50 percent of the vehicle license fee apply.
Shafter Generals edged Maricopa Indians 35 31 on the local court to move closer to the Sierra league title with Tehachapi still on the schedule. Vic Bender and Bud Anderson led with ten points each as Shafter held the Indians to 22 in the payoff quarter.
The Richland league final rounds open with a close boys game where Colgate won 23 to 22 over Shafter Hi-Town. Patsy Harley scored all 14 for her Flying Tigers, while Duke upset Notre Dame 26 to 15 with John Howard netting 16.
Reverend Joe Bruner, pastor of First Baptist Shafter and vice president of the Shafter Ministerial Association, was elected advisor for the Kern County Baptist Youth Fellowship’s year rally attended by about 200 Taft youths. The group lists member churches in Delano Wasco Bakersfield Buttonwillow Fell ows Taft Shafter and Mexican Baptist Taft. Marion Kattenhorn of Shafter is succeeded by Jimmy Shelton of Taft as president. Barbara Kintsel of Taft becomes corresponding secretary.
A mobile Veterans Administration unit from the Los Angeles Regional Office will tour 20 communities in southern California, traveling over 1000 miles. The bus will park at the region hall with hours 9:00 am to 9:00 pm and staff will address claims within 48 hours after daily closing.
Raymond Cato head of the California Highway Patrol will speak at the Central Valley Highway Association meeting at 7 p m tonight in the Californian Hotel Fresno Paul Newell association president will conduct the session Two units of the Fresno Bakersfield highway via Shafter Wasco Corcoran and Hanford are planned to start immediately.
The Wednesday Afternoon Club sponsors a local community players group. The first meeting is Thursday at 8:00 p.m. in the club building. Anyone interested in acting stage direction makeup publicity or other stage work is urged to attend. Mrs. Ed Brown says Bakersfield Community Players will aid in organizing.
County Fire Department responded Saturday morning to a car fire at Lerdo and James. The 1936 Ford sedan owned by Kenneth Davis of Shafter was damaged by gasoline leaking from the carburetor onto a hot exhaust pipe. Estimated damage was about $35 according to the fire department report.

Cub Scouts from Pack 13 raised about 140 dollars Saturday for the March of Dimes drive led by Cub Scout Master Bert Cook. The 1946 total placed them second for the year, with boys canvassing residential sections and uniformed patrols in the business district. Panero Theatres continued collections and a trailer, all funds deposited to the Bank of America under the March of Dimes drive per Mayor Frizzell’s direction.
Frank Robinson elected student body president for the second semester at Kern Academy. Other officers include Claremore Fenderson as vice president Jacqueline Horst secretary Darlene Johnson assistant secretary Walter Johnston treasurer and Ted Heinrichs sergeant at arms. Mrs Millie Adamson serves as faculty sponsor.
Patsy Corne and 25 of her young friends recently celebrated her tenth birthday. Assisting her mother were Mrs. Arnell and Mesdames E. W. Kinnicut and William Bestwater.
