The Shafter Chamber of Commerce announced awards at a January installation banquet with Citizen of the Year Judge Gary Ingle and Agricultural Award to Thurston Tut Anderson. Other honors went to Ray Cummings and Mel Parrett as Community Service and Business Award recipients respectively. The board also discussed sponsoring the Bakersfield Dodgers game and outlined a plan to fund events with higher turnout, while planning a budget meeting for January 31 at Giovanni's.

RTC kickback probe widens against city officials

Minter Field Sets April Airshow Dates for 1991
The Minter Field Airport District board approved April 27 and 28 for the 1991 airshow after considering later dates. Plans to shift dates were dropped due to conflicts with local events like the May Festival and Cinco de Mayo. The meeting also approved about $60 to install deadbolt office locks and took no action on a left turn request for Bidart Bros Farms on the easement road.

Permits show big year end increase in Shafter
The Board of Trade released year end building permit valuations with Shafter showing a 241 percent rise to 11.35 million in 1990 from 3.33 million in 1989 while Kern County rose 5 percent to 737.72 million. December activity was weak nationwide with Kern County down 27 percent. January figures for Shafter included three new residential permits totaling 279,224 and eight remodel permits totaling 35,249 along with one commercial remodel for 5,000 at the former Johnson's site.
